Steam train riding was to be the order of the day with an alternative of the Mt Victoria hotel for those who sought a quiet little corner for a cold liberation and some friendly chat.
We left at our usual designated time of 9.00 am with 39 bikes in company winding our way through Sydney’s torturous traffic until the right hand turn at James Ruse Drive and a few less traffic lights.
We picked up a couple more riders on the way and in a short time we arrived at our first stop at Windsor. While morning tea was consumed more bikes rolled in and we started the run up the mountain.
Carving through Bell’s Line of road bought home the devastation of the fires that went through the Blue Mountains last December, leaving me thinking of the poor blighters down Victoria way that are currently facing furnace like conditions as bush fires rip through…spare them a moments thought if you can.
The Zig Zag Railway was fantastic. As we travelled through the Clarence Tunnel it was incredible to think that this bit of line had been unused for 70 odd years.
The tunnel had been bypassed when the line became unable to handle all the rail traffic at the start of the 1900’s and ended up housing ammo during the Second World War. It wasn’t until a bunch of railway enthusiasts got involved and decided to rebuild the track that the tunnel was back open for business.
We highly recommend the train if you have visitors from overseas as it gets you in the heart of the bush and the amazing Blue Mountains and shows what a bunch of people on a mission can do if they want.
